Q:

Can IUDs cause heart palpatations or arrythmia?

I had an IUD inserted a few years ago after having my second child. Shortly after, I began having irregular heartbeat and was eventually diagnosed with SVT. After two heart surgeries and nearly two years of medications, I still had the palpatations. However, after having my IUD removed, I noticed the palpatations stopped. I know this may sound crazy, but can IUDs cause heart problems? Have other women had this experience?

Have you ruled out other factors, including having your heart checked?

No I have not. They want to put me on anxiety medications... so frustrating. I guess I'm going to have to start annoying my doctor. All this symptoms started with the iud. I don't do anything different nothing has changed in my life.

Anxiety medication might be the right thing for you, or it might not be. What is important is to have proper diagnosis, and to rule out other factors if they are concerning to you.

Do you have another doctor who you feel will listen to all of your symptoms, and do the necessary tests (if you have not had them already) to discern if your symptoms are from anxiety or another condition?

OMG! I just had my copper IUD inserted 7 months ago, I never had heart problems, or heart disease in my family, 4 months ago i was in the hospital for the same thing as the previous woman with atrial fibrations of the heart, I figured it was the IUD! because thats when my symptoms stared, I made a appoint ment for removal. my obgyn said i was stupid to remove it because those are not symptoms with a IUD! I kept it in and still till this day I have the same symptoms wich get worse while on my period wich Iam for sure it is due to my IUD! I just made a appointment today for removal, this is very upseting and crazy we all have the same symptoms!!!!!!! I have to children, and Iam 28 years old ! thank you for the help ladies!!!!

I am 31 and at age 29 I had 2 heart attacks while on the IUD Mirena. 6 days ago I had to have an ICD implanted because of the permanent damage done to my heart from the 2 attacks.

Hi,
I'm glad I found this site... I had a Mirena IUD inserted about 7 months ago. Within the last 3 weeks I've experienced the same symptoms as the ladies on this forum described. I'm 31, I'm eating extremely healthy and I'm exercising (intense cardio) 4 times a week; no heart issues in my family. In my opinion I'm not the perfect candidate for heard diseases... Last week I did all the blood tests, tomorrow I'm scheduled to have my IUD removed and 3 days from now I'll do the 24 hours hart monitoring. If my hart issues stop after my IUD is removed I will go further and approach the manufacturer (Byers - if I recall well) for not explaining clearly the side effects of this "thing". Women like us with children, family and careers should not experience "2 heart surgeries' before realizing how harmful the Mirena IUD is.

I had the Mirena IUD since September and sometime during the winter months I noticed that my heart was going crazy when I went to bed at night and my blood pressure was all over the place but not normal. I was also very tired and MEAN, which is very unusual for me. I also was having headaches, back pain, severe bloating, etc. I gained twenty-five lbs. in five months because I was constantly hungry. I finally figured out that it all started changing when I had the IUD inserted. I had it removed two days ago, the heart papitations have stopped, my blood pressue is getting better with each passing day and I am not as bloated (per my clothes). It is amazing how bad I felt and how much time I spent lying down. I am only 44 and should be full of energy. Hopefully by the end of summer, I will be almost back to normal.

Hi, Anon,

I don't know what to say, other than Wow, what an experience. It is amazing that your heart palpitations, your fatigue, your headaches and weight gain were all seemingly linked to something like your IUD. And that you have had SUCH improvement in just two days.

Good for you for thinking back and figuring out when all your symptoms started. I would love it if you would come back and update us when a little more time has passed and tell us if you're doing even better. Would you?
