Q:

Could I be pregnant?

Hi. I am 17 and started my period on the first or second of March. It finished between the eighth and tenth of March. I had sex on the fourteenth of March. My period came back on the fifteenth which is too early as my periods are usually seven days once a month. My second period went from the fifteenth to the eighteenth which is shorter than my usual period. On the nineteenth of March, I had very light bleeding which stopped. I'm just wondering if it is possible that I could be pregnant. Any information would be greatly appreciated. For the past two days, I have been feeling extremely tired (more tired than usual), tender breasts, bad headaches, dull pains in my lower abdomin, have increased salivation, nausea which seems to get a bit more unbearable every day, avoiding favourite foods and drinks and eating things I usually can't stomach such as fish. I have become noticeably more moody, have a kind of metallic taste in my mouth and even water tastes different. Last night, I was cooking dinner when I had a huge wave of nausea hit me. I had the sudden thought that I may need to run to the toilet to throw up. My period is due early next month and thinking of buying a pregnancy test on Friday which is the twenty-fifth of March. Is this too early to test?

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for coming to us with your concern of possibly being pregnant.

From what you have shared, I doubt you became pregnant by having (unprotected?) sex on March 14. Even though you might have been ovulating around this time, the bleeding which occurred the next day rules that out. This was not implantation bleeding, which happens around six to 12 days following conception.

The concern is why did you nave vaginal bleeding from March 15 to 18 with light bleeding on March 19. I am concerned about your other symptoms. Could the nausea, fatigue and lower abdominal pain mean you have a virus? Could moodiness and tender breasts be signs of PMS?

Anonymous, wait to buy a home pregnancy test until and if your next period is late by at least one week. If you continue to feel as you do without improvement, the symptoms worse, or you have a fever, please contact your primary care physician.

Regards,
Maryann

Thank you for getting back to me. It was unprotected. I will wait until I miss my period. I'm not sure if I could have a virus. My health is usually great apart from my hypothyroidism that I've been struggling with. I never have any signs like this before my period starts. I thought I'd ask anyways because I'm usually well in tune with my body and after unprotected sex (hasn't been the first time) I felt really different. Have never felt like this after unprotected sex.
