I am 50 and have been bleeding for 3wks. I called my gyn. and had an ultrasound. I have a small fibroid and a large cyst on my right ovary, and thickening of uterus. I had a CA 125 blood test which came back okay. Now they want to schedule me for a D&C. Is this the best or only option?

May 13, 2010 - 9:50amI was diagnosed with a submucousal fibroid about 3 cm .I am trying to get pregnant since last October (2009).One doctor overseas told me I need to removed but my husband wanted a second opinion so we went to UCLA.They said if within a year of trying we have to return and "see".The Dr said (UCLA) should be no problem....
My question here is how difficult can be pregnancy?
Is true that Doctors in USA try to avoid surgery as much as possible?

How difficult can it be to become pregnant with fibroids depends not only on their size, but also their exact location, as well as other factors. Unfortunately, we aren't able to tell you how easy/difficult it will be for you to become pregnant, as this varies greatly from each woman.
It is normal for woman who don't have fibroids to "wait" and try to conceive for one year...this is actually a very normal amount of time that it can take for couples to conceive, especially depending on other factors (age is also a factor).
It's funny that you have heard that doctors in the US try to avoid surgery, as I have heard the opposite...I live in the US, and after working in the health industry for many years, have repeatedly heard that the US is "known" for their over-zealous, intrusive and tendencies to overuse medical interventions/treatments. I guess it's all relative and based on who you talk to. That's why it is imperative to get second opinions, and educate yourself on fertility. The doctors at UCLA sound knowledgeable that they want to "wait and see" after you try for a year to become pregnant, and then you can move to other treatment options. Does this sound OK to you, or are you wanting treatment sooner than a year?
Sometimes fibroids do not present a problem in trying to conceive; other times the removal of fibroids can increase a woman's chance of conceiving (if the fibroids have caused fertilit problems) by as much as 70-80%. However...the other factor is that if you do become pregnant, fibroids are likely to begin growing again, and are not typically treated during pregnancy. Again...depending on the size, location and other health factors, fibroids may increase the chances of miscarriage once pregnant.

I will let you know because the fibroid is not the only problem I have since I turned 30,now I am 33.Basically I moved to this country 3 years ago and develop melasma -never in BC pills or hormones- just had copper IUD, after that I develop acne really bad -I took antibiotics, laser treatment and stopped eating dairy products-somethinh helped because the acne is gone but melasma is still a big issue; anyway took the decision of taking out the IUD last October.I returned to my home country for a short visit -long story short-
June 3, 2010 - 9:12pmbefore IUD my periods were long and heavy 5 days bleeding and painful
with IUD long periods 10 days bleeding very painful and bloated
after IUD just 2 days bleeding not much but painful
Still don't know if this fibroid is the main cause of melasma, period changes , acne.....
So many doubts...

well i had my D&C and hysteroscopy and made it just fine. I have very light bleeding at this time and no pain. I do however feel slightly bloated. Dr. said the tumor was large and had a large stem. The procedure didn't take long at all and I was surprised that I have had no pain. Thanks

Hello Again-
It's hard to say with a cyst. Ovarian cysts are really common. They often just go away on their own, but not always. Hopefully while they are doing the fibroid surgery they can take it and send it for pathology just so you can know exactly what it is and not worry about it. Because it is larger and you are older it may not be the typical cyst. We have some info on those: https://www.empowher.com/condition/ovarian-cysts
You know, my sister just had a D&C yesterday. They took some uterine polyps out. Those are nearly always benign, and the surgery itself is not a huge deal. But it is scary when there is something in you that needs to come out and you have to wait for an answer.
I guess I'm saying I get the fear, but I think it's all going to be good, you know? Let us know how you do, would you?
