I recently got a flu shot (less than a month ago) and now I have shingles on the right side of my forehead and my lymph nodes are enlarged. I really don't think it can be a mere coincidence if this many people have found this connection. I'm on antibiotics for it right now. I'm a 22 year old, healthy, and have been incredibly happy, not stressed much at all lately. I exercise every day as well and I am a medical student and have looked up shingles (herpes zoster) in several medical textbooks where it says the two can be connected.

I developed shingles this week, 2wks after taking the flu shot, I developed a sore throat later that night after the shot, which lead to a severe cold and chest infection. Its driving me nuts, I was also unaware that it included the H1N1 strain which he neglected to tell me (after I refused it last year).
I understand that gp's are rewarded for giving a flu shot to the tune of £5.25 from the government. 20 of those a week and he's quids in, along with his massive salary.

I have gotten the flu shot for 15yrs had no prblems ever even got the H1N1 last year. Well this year 2 days after I got a mild case of shingles on the same arm I had the shot in. Just found out it happened to 2 other people I know at it started on the same arm as the shot. Well I'll try one more year in 2011 if it happens again I'm done, Can't imagine what a full blown case is like my mild case killed me. Has anybody else out there gotten shingles in 2010 like me. I think I'm going to call the cdc and have my 2 friends who got shingles after their shot do the same

I had a flu shot 8/24/10 at 2:00 pm est. The next morning I had a very itchy feeling around my ears and the back of my head. This morning my eye was almost closed from swelling. I went to the doctor and I have shingles at age 55. This is the second time I've had shingles.

An hour after my mom got the flu shot (5/18/2010)... she broke out. They assumed it was just a rash. Nope... SHINGLES!

Anon,
I know what that feels like, and it's incredibly painful and annoying. Does it seem to lessen any with time?

You might benefit from taking a look at this site. It's all about AFTER having shingles, including post-shingles pain (postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN):

http://www.aftershingles.com/

Browse the site, because there are many resources for those with PHN. But here's a page on treatment possibilities:

http://www.aftershingles.com/after-shingles-pain/treatment.aspx

I hope these pages help. After-shingles pain is real, and it's horrible that you have dealt with it for six months now.

About one in five people who get shingles will also experience PHN.

This is all so interesting! My husband 52 yrs old has also had an outbreak of the shingles after his H1N1 shot. We were unable to get into the clinic... they wanted us to wait two weeks! We cannot afford to go to the ER because of our high deductible... so are doing the best we could naturally. L-Lysine 500mg 2X day, plenty of B & C Vitamins and grape seed extract also grapefruit seed extract to help fight viral infections. Capsin Cream works great on the blisters to calm itching (burns at first)
Best Wishes to you all as you recover!

Thank you for the great information. I'm so surprised that a doctor would not see your husband for 2 weeks....does he have a regular family doctor or general practitioner? (We're in the same boat as you with ridiculously high deductibles...but that's another topic!).

I hope he recovers soon...it sounds very painful.

I believe, and my chiropractor agrees, that the connection is that getting the flu shot ramps up your immune system to build antibodies to the flu shot (that is the purpose afterall). That then makes you more vulnerable to other things--like shingles or the cold virus. I still plan to continue getting the flu shot each year because, after all, I now have built up immunity to SHINGLES, too. But I can unequivocably say that SHINGLES SUCK.
