Women's periods are considered "normal" and "regular" when they begin anytime in the range of 21-35 days (cycle length).

Women's bodies do not work like machines; we are constantly interacting and reacting to our environment, and so do our cycles. You will notice your cycle length, duration, flow quantity and other characteristics change through the years. Sometimes, there is no "apparent" reason; other times you may have been recently ill, have a new job/partner or other major life event, start/stop exercising, new prescription...any "new" change could alter your cycle slightly.

The best times to conceive are during your most fertile days, which occur before and during ovulation. It is tricky to pinpoint exactly, as most ovulation kits tell you after-the-fact that you have ovulated. There are methods to track your cervical mucus and basal temperature...but these provide overall trends of when you are most likely to be fertile. No precise test (in home) can be done to know "today is the day"!

What do you do? Most experts suggest for women just beginning to conceive, to have sex often! Every-other day or at least four times a week is great. Most couples are not able to have sex this often (life does still go on, after all), so just as frequently as you two are willing and able to have sex is best...it is an emotional roller coaster, as many couples do say sex begins to feel like a chore. Every couple is different, so do what is best physically and emotionally for you and your partner.

Expect ups and downs, and also expect conception to take 6-12 months. Most women think the second they are off birth control, they will conceive. Some do...most do not. It really does take months to conceive for most women who are trying, as women's fertile window is only 24 hours every 28 days! (during ovulation). You can increase this timeframe by having sex often up to the days you think you are going to ovulate, as sperm can live inside your body for up to 3-5 days, and it is best for the sperm to be "waiting" for the egg to be released (ovulation).

Lastly, most women ovulate about 2 weeks before their period, but ovulation can occur as early as "day 7" in your cycle, or as late as "day 21" in your cycle (counting "day 1" as the first day of bleeding).

Most importantly: Have realistic expectations, have fun, try not to get too wrapped up in the calendar or dates or timing! Good luck!
