Frequent Diarrhea and The Pill

I know this isn't a very pleasant topic, but I am a little worried. I have been taking Sprintec oral contraceptive for over 4 months now and always take it around the same time each day. Since Sunday I have had diarrhea. It is happens over two hours after I take my pill, but I hear that it can compromise the effectiveness of the pill. I read the insert and it said that I should count it as a missed pill if I had diarrhea less than two hours after taking the pill, which isn't the case in my situation. I had sex with my boyfriend on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. My sister (an RN) said that I should still be protected but I can't help still being anxious. Today my boyfriend bought me spermicidal foam and ovulation predictor tests. Basically, I am wondering if I am still protected or if I should get emergency contraception? Thank you in advance

Hey MoeyBear,

Glad I saw that p.s.! That's definitely the first thing to figure out.

If the package says to use back up contraception if the diarrhea is less than 2 hours after you've taken the pill, I'd pay attention to that. Luckily, you said that wasn't the case for you. Although I agree with your sister, for now, I would be cautious. Per your sister's advice and the BC info, it looks like you are okay. However, since there really is no sure way of telling, the emergency contraception is really up to you.

Best,

Danielle.

P.S. I don't know why I am having diarrhea and am calling my doctor first thing to get an appointment.
