Q:

Has anyone had plastic surgery or laser surgery to remove a venous lake (bluish blood bump) from your lip?

I have had a venous lake on my lip for 10 years. It got bigger and more noticeable and I decided to have it removed. I was referred to a plastic surgeon and had surgery 3 days ago. I finally had to courage to look into the mirror today and I'm alarmed at the result. I wish I had sought out a dermatologist who utilizes the laser treatment. The plastic surgeon said it was too big for laser treatment but he doesn't utilize laser in his practice anyway. Has anyone else gone the surgery route versus laser and what were your results?

thanks

Hello,
My name is Valerie Nicole and I am currently shopping around for the best (Pulsed Dye Laser) PDL treatment possible. I just turned 23 and acquired this venous lake on my upper lip about 5 1/2 months ago. I wasn't sure what it was exactly, until today I decided to conduct my own research.

I visited a doctor a month ago for three medical reasons and this lesion on my lip was one of them. He had no idea what it was and prescribed me some prescription pill medicines that has had no effect.

Now that I know it is a Venous Lake, I feel somewhat of a relief. My mind would race all the time just thinking of negatives diagnoses, and my confidence would deter because of this lesion. I am writing just to share my story and experience. I have learned that Vbeam is one of the best Lasers to use for this treatment so I am going to begin to shop around. I am located in Los Angeles CA so if anyone else has information on specialists in my area, please feel free to comment me. Thank you for taking the time to read this, feel free to share your story as well.

Valerie:
I'm glad you did your research and discovered what the lesion on your lip was. Laser seems to be the best and least intrusive treatment available. Keep us posted on your progress and I'm hoping you have excellent results with your treatment.

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER. One of the most common venous lake treatments is laser therapy. This form of treatment has been found in many cases to be the safest, most effective way to get rid of the lesions and is unlikely to leave scarring. Typically, a type of laser called a pulsed dye laser, or PDL, is used to target the small vessels where the blood is pooling and causing the venous lake.  I hope here you will find answers from others that have gone through the same as you.

Best,

Daisy

Daisy thanks for your reply. I wish I had done more research before visiting the plastic surgeon. The surgery was much more invasive than I expected and I strongly suggest for anyone reading this post to visit a dermatologist and ask for the laser treatment. A plastic surgeon should be the last resort.
