How can I alleviate pain from penetration?

I was recently asked to attend the cervical screening check up (after turning 25).After having the speculum inserted I felt a twinge of pain but mostly just a bit of discomfort. After the nurse started opening it however I felt extreme pain and she didn't even open it half way before she stopped the procedure as I was in too much pain and she didn't want it to become a traumatic experience. As I am perfectly healthy she said I can come back for another when I'm ready.

I'm still a virgin and have never had anything inside me before like toys or vibrators, I also have no partner. I'm now petrified that if I ever do have sex it will be a horrible and painful experience, is there anyway to prevent this? Is there someway I can 'stretch' myself? I also want to be able to have cervical screenings without horrendous pain.
I really don't know what to do.
