How close to the end of a birth control pack is it safe to have sex?

Just asking out of curiosity. I use Gynera which is a combination pill and has 21 in a pack. There are no sugar pills.
I'm asking this because a friend of a friend of mine (and also my acquaintance) got pregnant a few years ago by having unprotected sex during the first days of the seven day break (not sure when exactly). She never got a period and then went to the gyno and discovered she was pregnant.

Is it safe to have sex so close to the end of a pack? Does protection against pregnancy lessen the closer you are to finishing a pack of pills? We always use condoms in addition to the pills and he never finishes inside me. However I still want to have peace of mind that what we’re doing is safe and I won’t be at risk for pregnancy.

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Pregnancy when taking the birth control pill properly is almost impossible. There has to be some kind of medical /medication interaction or a person forgets the pill, is embarrassed and says they have no idea how they got pregnant. Happens a lot!
There is no additional risk for you at any time of the month as long as you take your pills faithfully.
Best,
Susan
