Q:

How long does it take after total hysterectomy for all hormones to be out of my body?

I am 5 weeks post op and I have not started HRT as my menopausal symptoms have been nonexistent. I'm wondering how long before I will know my "new normal"?

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Women go into menopause straight after a full hysterectomy and sometimes the menopausal symptoms are worse than natural menopause. Some feel the effects in days, others can take months, depending on their estrogen levels before the procedure.
Women often start taking HRT straight away, regardless of symptoms. Others adopt a wait-and-see policy. If you are going to do that, make sure you have your ducks in a row if symptoms start, as it can happen out of the blue. Look into the possibilities of HRT now so you'll be ready. Maybe a miracle will happen and you won't feel huge effects - time will tell - stay optimistic as well as realistic.
Best,
Susan
