I started my period on 4-20-09, it only lasted 3 days, which is not completely out of the norm for me, but it has been 37 days now since the first day of my period. My husband and I had sex on 4-30-09. I have taken a HPT but it came back negative and I was just wondering if I could be pregnant and I just took the HPT to soon? I have been more tired than my norm lately.

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question. If you had a period and took a pregnancy test, you should be safe that you are not pregnant. Are you trying to get pregnant? If not, you should really concern yourself with some sort of birth control method or at the least use condoms.
Since you actually had a period, there is nothing you should do at this time. Sometimes periods can be irregular at times especially when you’re in your teens and 20s. This is just common. If you are concerned, make a doctor’s appointment just to be sure. I hope this helps.

Starting in May my husband and I began trying for our first baby. My period was on May 17 and then 16 days later I had one night of spotting. My period was due on June 15 but never came until 20 days late on July 5. Today is July 8 and my periods over. Normally I have a regular 29 day cycle and my periods last 7 days. I havent taken any pregnancy tests in about 2 weeks because they were negative before so I am not sure what's going on with me?

Hi,
Congratulations on trying to conceive! It is definitely an emotional time with excitement...anticipation...then disappointment and confusion when it doesn't "work" and your period begins, or even worse: your period does not begin, but you have negative pregnancy tests and you don't know what to think!

Your last menstrual period was July 5th, and it lasted for 3 days. This was a much different period, as you skipped a period in June, and this period was abnormally short (3 days vs. 7 days). Your previous pregnancy tests were negative in June, so that's a good sign (meaning, your hormones did not increase, so you most likely did not experience a pregnancy and miscarriage).

The answer: we're not sure what is going on! However, it is likely nothing to worry about. Honest. I know it is frustrating and confusing beyond belief, but your period really can become irregular for no "apparent reason", and you can still have a healthy cycle. When you should contact your doctor:
- 3 missed periods in-a-row
- period with excessive bleeding that lasts more than 7 days
- period with excessive bleeding, soaking more than one pad or tampon every hour
- any unusual pain or severe pain

If you do not have any of these symptoms above, take note of this previous strange irregular period, and move forward armed with information that if you have another irregular period, you can contact your doctor. If you do not, then you know it was just a strange occurrence and could be from stress, recent illness, new medication (or not taking your usual hormonal birth control). Many women's cycles become irregular when they start trying to conceive for a few reasons:
- they are no longer taking their hormonal contraceptives, and these synthetic hormones were creating a regular cycle
- stopping hormonal contraception can lead to irregular cycles for a month or two, while your body's natural hormones begin to "take over" their usual/previous functions
- women begin paying closer attention to their cycles when they are trying to conceive (ttc), and notice discrepancies that may have been overlooked before. some women who have a shorter period who are not ttc may have just thought, "awesome!", while a woman who is ttc thinks, "what's wrong?" and "great, now when do I ovulate?".

I hop this information helps; please let us know if you have any additional questions!

You're more than likely right cause we've been using an ovulation predictor and it says this week I should ovulate. Well I will keep you posted hopefully soon enough it will happen!!!

I sure hope so. Best of luck to you, and I hope very soon you'll have a positive pregnancy test and all the joy that follows. :)
