Q:

I have recently discovered dents (or ridges) in my fingernails. What does this mean?

I have dents on all of my fingernails except one. They did not used to be there! What is wrong? I am taking vitamins, and I believe I am relatively healthy. I am 19.

I used acetone nail polish removerplbe and then mine appeared, too. Must be removing good things with the polish remover...I could not get all the polish off, so was really rubbing it in...!!

Anon,

Usually when you can see white stripes or marks on your nails that is a sign of damage to the nail bed. You may have hurt your nails and never even realized it. Have you read the other replies to the similar concerns on this post? Many times this may occur from a vitamin deficiency, damage to the nail, as part of your normal anatomy, or can be more significant and require further testing from your doctor. Do you have any health issues that concern you?

I looked at the link you posted... On the slideshow on page 6 "Rippled nails", that's exactly what mine are. It says it could be an early sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis, so I'll definitely ask when I go see the doctor next week. Thanks for your help!

I am so happy that you found some potential answers; at least some good questions to ask your doctor about. Please keep us posted after your doctor's appointment next week!

I feel bad not replying sooner! I asked my doctor about them and she shrugged it off saying it wasn't anything... still not sure but it doesn't seem to be affecting me much :/

I've had bumps in my fingernails that come and go since I was about 5 or 6 years old... now I'm 20 and still have them, but lately have had more than usual... I finally mentioned it to my mom and she said to ask the doctor when I have my appointment next week... but it's weird! they're just multiple tiny tiny bumps

Let us know what the doctor says, and you may want to review the previous comments, links and information in the above threads, so you are educated before going to the doctor!
