I took the nextchioce two step and I took the first pill about 11hrs later and then took the second pill 5 hrs. Later than the recommended 12hr. timeframe is that okay? Is it still effective ?

I had protected sex with my boyfriend and the condom broke so to be safe we decided to Take a emergency contraceptive

Hi Anon,

  • Welcome to EmpowHER.  According to NextChoice, The first one should be taken within
    72 hours (3 days) of having unprotected sex, sexual attack, or a known or suspected contraceptive failure, and a study shows a greater effect when taken sooner1
  • The second one should be taken 12 hours after the first tablet is taken. You might want to wait until your period is due and take a pregnancy test or see your doctor.
