I'm sorry you're dealing with this very annoying, yet common, pain. Did the E.R. doctor explain possible causes, by any chance?
The carpal tunnel is a small passage that runs along the inside of your wrist and protects the main nerve between your hand and your fingers. When that nerve is compressed, you feel that tingling and numbness. Some believe that repetitive use, like the tapping on a keyboard, causes the syndrome, which would make sense for many of us. However, other causes can be hormonal or related to your immune system.
I once dealt with a case of CTS because I had to reach my keyboard across a non-ergonomic desk, putting strain on my entire wrist because of an uncomfortable position of my hand. The pain traveled all the way up my arm, very painful. To alleviate the situation, I would hold my keyboard on my lap where it was more comfortable.
The good news is that CTS is treatable.
How are you being treated, and do you know what caused your symptoms?
