my 80 yr old mother has tested positive for klebsiella in upper uti which presented with her vomiting once and nearly passing out before she was rushed to hospital for diagnosis. The doctor on staff put her on levoquin...but she reacted with severe diarrhea and her appetite began to shut down. We had to stop levoquin. Now he wants to put her on Macrobid 500 mg. Problem is she used this once before. My mother has a lung issue already and we know this will not go down well. Understand aggressive treatment is usually needed to stop Klebsiella, but we don't want to further injure my Mother...any suggestions on an approach without using these harmful antibiotics?

So happy there are some science based nurses on this site. I worked in public health as a nurse clinician (STDs and other communicable diseases.) I was almost afraid of what I was going to find with CAM (my take on CAM is SCAM…supplementary, complementary alternative MODALITIES…can never ever call it medicine.)

I can appreciate your concern for exposing your mother to antibiotics, especially since she has had adverse reactions to both Levoquin and Macrobid.
Unfortunately, antibiotic therapy is the only way to treat a Klebsiella infection.
Klebsiella is a type of gram-negative bacteria that causes different types of healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia and bloodstream infections.
