Q:

Looking for affordable health insurance

I am looking for something purely for catastrophic coverage for under $100/month. I am a 36 year old woman with no major health issues or pre-existing conditions. I can handle a $3-5,000 deductable. I am not looking for general health coverage as I do not trust most general health practitioners that are bound to insurance companies and most of my doctors do not accept insurance. I just want to be covered in case of any major injuries/emergencies.

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Empowher. I can share my experience as I am 34 years old and experienced a job loss in addition to loss of health insurance. I am not sure where you are located but many insurance agencies have 6 month policies where you can purchase a monthly insurance premiums at low costs. Since you and I are "baby-bearing" age, I did have to sign a disclosure that my insurance would not cover pregnancy to have a lower premium.

I purchased my own insurance for approximately two years, changing companies every 6 months as they were only short term policies but I am sure you can ask around for short term policies in your State. I would certainly bring up the pregnancy question when asking for pricing. You may be able to get around the higher pricing due to your age and signing those disclosures since you are mainly looking for catostrophic issues. I hope this helps.

Thank you very much. This is something I used to do. I really appreciate your response and am now motivated to pursue this avenue once again.
