I'm 33 and I've already had 2 myomectomies and seem to be in need of a 3rd. my first one was an abdominal one when I was 24, the 2nd was a hysteroscopic one when I was 30. The fibroids have been back for quite some time and are growing, my last ultrasound which was a few weeks ago show them being at 5cm and 8cm and a lot of smaller ones plus the cavity of my uterus couldn't even be seen.. my doctor recommended nothing.. he said that I should wait till I decide to have kids and then have the surgery again before i start to try to conceive. I have no children and would like to preserve my fertility. my symptoms are getting worse by the day.. bulkiness feeling to the max, I literally feel the fibroids walking, sitting, standing.. i have to use the bathroom atleast 12 times a day and night.. sometimes not even being able to go even though my bladder is full, and my periods are long, painful and heavy. I would like a 2nd opinion, or atleast talk to a doctor who can explain to me my options and tell me exactly why is going on inside of my uterus. If anybody knows any specialist if NYC I would greatly appreciate it..

thanks.
Jasmine

This is interesting to hear other stories. I have had to myomectomy's in two years and my fibriods have grown back again this year. They seem to grow rapidly each year. I so want to have a child and will do anything to get there.(age 30) I'm really not wanting another surgery as this is really hurting my uterus by weakening it. I go to the Dr.s tomorrow to see the size. Im praying they are not too large. I agree you MUST take your health into your own hands!

Hi Jasmine,
I read your post today and thought I'd share a little bit about what I've done. In January I decided to take my health issues into my own hands. I went on a 23 day water fast and dropped about 20lbs. I was hoping the weight loss and the detoxing of my body would help to reduce the size of my fibroid. My motivation was wanting to get pregnant without having such an invasive surgery. I went back to the fertility specialist and my tumor had not changed. The doctor insisted that surgicaly removing the tumor would be my best bet and that I should take Lupron to reduce the size before the surgery. I still did not feel confident about this procedure. I continued with my new health regimen. I decided not to eat any meat, sweets or dairy and I only drank water. I continued to fast 1 day per week and I purchased an herbal tea specificaly for reducing fibroids. I noiticed within 3 mos that my pain during my periods were decreasing and the length of my period was getting shorter. Once my periods were as long as 11 days and this past month it only lasted 5. Although my doctors will not confirm this I think losing weight and not eating meat has attributed to this change. I no longer have to be balled up in my bed and don't feel all the aches in my legs and thighs anymore. I also did some more research and found out about interventional radiologists who take an MRI of your uterus and are able to give you a better analysis of your situation because they have a clearer picture. I had my MRI and consult today and I decided to go with the UFE procedure. It will not require major surgery and I can preserve my uterus. Because of the size and position of my tumor the radiologist advised me that surgicaly removing my fibroid could damage my uterus and even lead to having to have a hysterectomy. He also said that with UFE the fibroid will not grow back.
My suggestion is to do as much research as you can on your situation. Take charge of your own health don't just follow what doctors say blindly, and know what you are setting yourself up for. If I had not done my research I would probably have thought that a myomectomy was my only option.

Hey Jasmine, we asked one of our wonderful experts, Dr. Philip Sarrel for his opinion on a specialist in the NYC area for your specific issue. Here's what he had to say ... "She should try to see Dr. Margaret Nachtigal. Her office is on East 33rd St. There are several members of the Nachtigal family in that office-Margaret is the correct one for her."

Does that help?

Hey Jasmine, thanks for writing. We have forwarded your question to a former professor of gynecology who lived and worked in your area for many years, as well as one of our writers who is based in NYC. Hopefully they can provide some insight for you shortly. Like Diane said ... hang in there.

Jasmine, I changed the title of your post so that others could see that you are also looking for a doctor in NYC. And in the meantime, I'd like to try to get your question to one of our experts. Hang in there with us for a few days -- they are busy people -- and let's see what we can find out for you, OK?
