Dear Anon,

As an older sister to a 14 year old, I can say that it is a struggle to get her eat to eat foods high in fiber but luckily there are plenty of fruits and other foods high in fiber-- one of them being her favorite, the orange.

An increase of fiber and water in the diet is almost sure to help your sister have a bowel movement more frequently. Apples, strawberries, and raspberries are three delicious fruits that can help her get started. These three fruits are high in fiber content and are easy on the palate.

Whole wheat bread and air popped popcorn are also two more foods that can be easily included in every day diet. Remember that nuts and legumes as well as certain green veggies such as broccoli and peas-- and even sweet corn are also high in fiber content.

For a 14 year old, it may be difficult to incorporate all these foods into her diet at once, so I would suggest taking baby steps..first with the fruit if that is what she favors, then slowly adding one more thing and another. Good Luck and remember-- lots of water!
