Q:

NuvaRing fell out, Unprotected Sex, Bleeding...?

NuvaRing fell out Sunday 2/6 in the evening.
I had sex Monday 2/7 not knowing it had fallen out.
Today, Tuesday 2/8 I began bleeding.

1. Could I be pregnant?
2. Should I take emergency contraception?
3. Can I resume NuvaRing the same time I use emergency contraception?

Thank you!

I did not reinsert the ring because the NuvaRing website said not to after 3 hours.
Thank you for your help!

Did you re-insert the ring?

The patient instructions with the ring have explicit instructions on what to do if you "miss a dose" (meaning: the ring fell out, you forgot to insert it, etc).

Basically...if you miss one dose (one day), there is no increased risk for pregnancy, as long as you re-insert the ring as soon as you remember (or, as soon as you realize it fell out).

Since it fell out sometime Sunday night, and today is Tuesday... if you did not re-insert the ring, you can take emergency contraception. You can also re-insert the ring. EC is just a "mega dose" of hormones that work with or without your current birth control. You may have some nausea, so be sure to use the EC with food.
