I shouldn't have my period for about another week, but I keep spotting and I feel like I should have my period. I had sex two weeks ago, but it was protected.... does this mean I'm pregnant? I'm really worried cause I turn 17 yesterday and my parents will be so mad if I am. What do I do? and How do I know? Is it just because my body is a little out of wack? Or could I seriously be prego?

Hi,
When you are on birth control pills, you don't actually have a period (it is "withdrawal bleeding"...I can explain more if you are interested). When taking the pill, if you experience bleeding that is not during the 7 days of "inactive" pills, this is called "breakthrough bleeding" and is completely normal. Breakthrough bleeding is especially common the first few months you begin taking the pill.
Anytime you have unprotected sex, you have a chance of pregnancy. When you miss 3 or more pills in-a-row, then you need to use back-up method of birth control (condom) for the next 7 days, and follow the instructions on your pack, which usually says to throw out the pack and start a new one on that following Sunday (or Monday...whatever your start date).
Your bleeding is likely the withdrawal bleeding I was referring to, as your body thinks that you have stopped taking the pill and is responding by a "withdrawal" of the hormones by bleeding. This is not harmful to your body, but does mean you are not protected from pregnancy.
You may want to call your doctor's nurse and ask if you should start a new pack of pills since you've missed 5 pills in-a-row and had unprotected sex during that time. I'm not sure if they would want you to start a new pack, or just wait until your period starts to make sure you are not pregnant.
Let me know what other questions you have

Hi,
Are you taking any type of hormonal contraceptive (birth control pills, for example)?
Ususally bleeding indicates that you are NOT pregnant; it is the absence of bleeding and/or a period that could be an indicator of pregnancy.
If you are on birth control pills, it could be breakthrough bleeding that you are experiencing, or an "early" period.
Does this help?

No, I'm not. I should be though.
So, spotting and cramping before your period, just means that your hormons are out of wack?
And that does help! Thanks so much. I feel a lot calmer

Hi,
I just wanted to clarify what type of "protected" sex you had, so it sounds like you used a condom since you are not on hormonal contraceptives. Condoms are a great choice, so you don't necessarily "need" to be on other birth control if you choose not to!
Birth control pills can cause breakthrough bleeding, a primary cause of bleeding that occurs when it is not time for your period.
Women's cycles are not always 100% "on time" as predicted, so you may be starting your period early. Does not mean your hormones are out of whack at all...just means that your cycle is shorter this month than typical which is perfectly normal.
If you are worried about pregnancy, you can always take a home pregnancy test if your period does not begin (and you only experience light spotting), just to rule it out. There is something called "implantation bleeding" that women experience when they become pregnant, but this is just light spotting one day...not actual "bleeding".
Good for you for using protection! Condoms are up to 98% effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly; compared to 99% effectiveness rate of birth control pill. Those are great odds!

Yes, condom. And thanks :) I would rather not go on birth control so if its just as effective, I won't! :)
What is implantation bleeding though? Does it mean that you've lost the baby?
And you seem to know a lot, so I have one more question.... Are two condoms better then one? Or does it not make a difference? Some say using two increases your risk others say it decreases.

Implantation bleeding is the term for when a fertilized egg implants itself into your uterus, just before you become officially impregnated (pregnant). Some women experience a little spotting when the egg implants; others don't.
Two condoms are actually worse, as they are not designed to be doubled up and can cause friction and tear, or slip off/out. If you want to be super-safe, you can try using a condom and the withdrawal method as a combination. You can read more about that here: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/withdrawal-pull-out-method-4218.htm, or also look at the FAM (fertility awareness method, which basically means you have sex when you think you are least fertile).
