Q:

Stopped having periods. What's going on? Could I be pregnant?

Hello!

I am currently studying abroad. I had protected sex with my SO (as always, a condom ad my hormonal BC) in September. Since then I had a period in late September, in October, but not in November or December. I stopped taking my birth control in November and December since I am no longer having sex. I started my BC again this month because I will be going home soon.

Why have my periods stopped in November and December? Could I be pregnant? I will admit I am living in China where the nutritional levels are lower and I've been under high stress. I have lost some weight as well.

I know I may be being irrational but I don't have access to a pregnancy test at the moment. If I am pregnant, I'd be 4.5 months with no symptoms!

Hi Anon12456,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

If you have not engaged in unprotected sex then pregnancy is not a concern. Now for your irregular period or time with no menstrual cycle at all, is more than likely caused by hormonal imbalance. Since you have been on and off birth control pills your body is trying to adjust to the changes, which one of the main side effects is changes in menstrual cycle.

Give it some more time to see. But if you are super concerned, make an appt to see a doctor.

I hope this helps.
Be well,
