Hi Anonymous,
September 13, 2010 - 11:47amThank you for your question and for finding EmpowHER.
It is important to always use the least absorbency possible to avoid over-drying the lining of the vagina and putting yourself at risk for Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but dangerous infection. If she is soaking through a pad or tampon in an hour for several hours, she needs to be seen by a doctor. Has your granddaughter been to see a family doctor or gynecologist yet? It's never a bad idea to have that first visit with one to ensure a life of good quality reproductive health, and to get your granddaughter comfortable with taking care of herself. They also may have ideas and treatments to help with menorrhagia (heavy period bleeding), and make sure that the bleeding is not cause for concern.
Here is a good resource for all things teen sexual health (it may be helpful for you and your granddaughter), page 7 in particular deals with tampon use:

Good luck and let us know if you have any additional questions.
