95% of the time i wake up with a backache. i have a feeling it's my bed but i can't afford another one. not a real good one tho. there about 500 and up. is there a exercise i can do to help the ache? it hurt's mainly in the middle and up. i don't sleep good cause of that either. or is there another way of getting rid of it in the morning's or something i can do to put on my bed that i could actually sleep and not get up with a back ache???? i have tried some of those home foam thing's that go on your bed and that didn't work either.

Chiropractic is the only thing that will FIX your problem. The other ideas like sleeping positions, new pillows, and more will provide relief which is what you seem to be looking for. Investing in your health is a great idea. I do not know your age, but if you do not see a chiropractor now and have it fixed, your body will adapt and later in life you could experience even more pain. For a better quality of life, I recommend seeing a chiropractor. Many chiropractors will work with you, if you cannot afford it. Some care is better than none, too. What is your profession or do you have a skill? Some chiropractors may even work with you to barter. You can even ask if they are hiring part-time for anything and if so, they usually offer employees care as one of the benefits. You would have to ask, but chiropractors truly try to help others. Some chiropractors, including mine at Allentown Chiropractic Ctr in PA, will reward you with a free visit/adjustment when you refer a new paying patient as a way of saying thank u. Just something to think about. Where do u live? Best wishes for a healthy, happy life!

Hi, franinfl:

Alison already gave you a resource for sleeping positions, one of the first questions my sports physical therapist would have asked about.

I have another question for you: have you ever considered seeing a Chiropractor? You might be in need of a realignment. It's easy for us women to throw ourselves out of alignment just by the way we stand, sit, bend or even reach.

there's no way i can see a chiropractor. i have no insurance and i can not afford to go see one. that's why i was trying to figure out a CHEAP way to stop this. But if that's what i need then i guess i'll have this for the rest of my life. thanx for helping.

I just stumbled upon this great resource, and thought of your question!

Mayo Clinic Slide show: Sleeping positions that reduce back pain

Hope that helps---let us know what you think!

Franinfl,

I am wondering how you are doing with your previous back pain (or, is it still there)? Were you able to try the different sleep positions, and did any of them help in any way?

Hi,

A few thoughts for you (beyond seeing a doctor, which it sounds like you would like to try a few other alternatives first):
1) Have you tried purchasing another pillow? That is much cheaper than a bed (!), and helped my back and neck when I got a good pillow that was appropriate for how I sleep (side, back or stomach), for the alignment of my head and spine, etc.

2) Do you have a store nearby that specializes in the back? We have a few of these stores, which sell really expensive items, but you may find a cheaper product there. Or, maybe they can "fit" you for a pillow that you can purchase elsewhere? (remember, these are just sales associates, but they may be a helpful piece to the puzzle).

3) As far as exercises go, I would recommend hatha yoga, as it is a gentle stretching and breathing type conditioning exercise, and focuses on core and back strength.

I had the same problem as you did, and we purchased a new foam bed and new pillow, and I no longer have back pain (unless I stay in bed too long, which is a rare occurrence!) We bought an expensive foam top for our old bed, which did help (cheaper than a new bed, but still expensive).
