What is causing my lower back pain and what can I do to relieve it?

The onset of my lower back pain was sudden. I cannot bend, nor can I lay down, yet sitting makes it throb. Its always worse after trying to lay down for a bit, when I get up. It feels like definate sharp pain, yet tight as well. I have had a cold with a bad cough and sneezing, could I have done something to my back while coughing?

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well.  Have you taken an Epsom Salt bath?  This should help both your cold and your low back.  If you dont have any, you can buy them at your local drugstore (CVS, Wallgreens).  You can use more than the allotted 2 cups.  I would double it with 4 cups or handfuls and soak for a good 20 minutes.  You want to be sweating (epsom salts help to detox the body).

After you take your bath and your muscles are more warmed up, try doing gentle pelvic tilts by slowly tucking your tail bone towards the ground and then toward the ceiling. Cat Cow is always a good one for pelvic stilts and warming up the low back. Focus on the movement in your hips and where it connects to the low back.

Stretching your legs (runner's lunge stretch, v-sit, etc.) can also help free up the low back.  Oftentimes when our legs and hips are tight our low back follows.

Also, have you been to a muscular/massage therapist?  And Chiropractor?  If you do not have one you regularly go to, ask around and see if anyone you know (and trust) goes to a good practitioner.

Hope all of this helps!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I'm sorry to hear that. How about going both to a physical therapist and orthopedist to make sure is nothing serious? Keep a warm heating on your back which will help relieve the pain.

Hi, Do you have any kind of back problem generally? If yes it could be the cause of it. Have you had any injury of anykind?

I have 4 herniated discs in my neck that were injured 10 years ago. I opted for 8 months of psyical therepy vs surgery and they have not been a problem since.
This pain is in my lower back, which has never bothered me before.
As I said, it seemed quite sudden that it started.
I was fine friday morning but by about noon, couldn't bend and have been in this pain since.
