Q:

What do you do if you have never had sex but you haven't had your period for about 32 days?

I am almost 14 years old. It may seem weird that I am on a website to ask about my lady problems but my mother and sister are no help and my dad, well, he is my dad. I have had my period for over a year and from then to now I have kept an accurate record of when I have gotten and when I have ended my menstrual cycle. Since January or December of this year (well not December, but ya) I have gotten my period on the 16th. It is now may and I expected to get my period yesterday but it didn't come. Hopefully I thought it would come today but it didn't. I am now really worried because I know I can't be pregnant since I have never had sex and it doesn't seem normal today to have not of had your period in 32 days. I have no idea what to do except to just wait and stress myself out. Please help me because I am not sure if this is just normal or if I am really going crazy.

Thank you very much,

A. N. W.

(don't laugh at me my parent's didn't mean to name me after a root beer company.)

Hi, ANW, and welcome to EmpowHer!

First of all, I really want to pat yourself on the back for two things: wanting to learn more information about what goes on in your body, and taking charge of finding yourself a site where you can do that since you can't get very much information in your family. You will find when you're older that you've got a couple of pretty cool, important skills there.

Let's talk about periods some. I would not worry At All about the fact that you are late. Especially since you are so young and haven't had sex yet. Our menstrual cycles often go through a bit of a bump. What rules our menstrual cycle is hormones, called estrogen and progesterone. Throughout the month, your hormones prepare your uterus in case a fertilized egg comes, so it can implant and grow into a baby. When no egg comes, more hormones tell your body that it won't be pregnant this month and it needs to get rid of the uterine lining that it had built up. That's when your period happens.

Lots of things can upset our hormones a little bit, and it's not a problem when it happens. You might have had a stressful month. You might have been more active because it's warmer outside. Maybe you started a new medicine or new vitamins, or started drinking a lot more soda pop, or were under a lot of pressure because school is ending. All those things can affect our hormone levels, and when our hormone levels are affected, our cycle is affected.

Sometimes a period comes every 28 days like clockwork. Then you'll go through a time when it's 29, 31, 28, 32, 29 days. Sometimes you might even skip a month, if you're dieting, very active or very stressed. Again, since you haven't had sex, this really isn't worrisome at all.

Have any of the things I've named above been part of your month this month?

Don't stress out over this. That can make it worse. Just relax and know that it's perfectly normal to be all out of whack sometimes. It won't be the last time that it happens!!!

Does this information help? Are there more specific questions I can answer for you about anything at all?

I have had my pierod since i was about 14 and im 17 now so i have had them for about 4 years. i was due tem on Friday 10th and now its the 12th. i have never missed a pierod and never had sex so is it normal for them to be late, i am stressed as i am in my last year of school and i have fallen out with friends, would that be the reason they are late..??

Your period may not actually be late, as a women's period begins within a range of times. Consider this: your cycle may be regular, but even if it is exactly 28-days between each period, a calendar month is usually 30 or 31 days. Eventually, your period will begin falling on a different calendar date, so you can't use the calendar day to monitor your period.

It is important to track your periods, and know how long each cycle is. "Day 1" counts as the first day of your period, and then count the number of days until your next period. The normal range for women's cycles is 21-35 days.

Your period will most likely start sometime within the week. If your period actually is "late", this is perfectly normal as women's bodies are not machines...they react to the environment and ebb and flow...and any environmental change can also change your period including if you were recently sick, take new medication, had excess stress.

Yes, as I said above your period is not really "late", and your periods will change per the exact calendar date they begin on for all the reasons mentioned above.
