We do not interpret lab results for our readers as that needs to be done by the readers' own health care providers. The significance of this number depends on a person's whole health. Numbers less than 4,000 white blood cells per microliter of blood are considered low. Viruses can lower white blood counts, as can bacterial infections, cancer or auto-immune conditions.
