Q:

Will standing in the sun for at least ten minutes per day help at all?

I first noticed the "herald patch" on the top of my right foot 3 weeks ago. I have lesions now on my torso, legs and buttocks. I'm African-American with dark skin and I really don't want these things to leave black spots all over my body. If I wear a bikini in my backyard and expose the lesions to direct sunlight will it help? What should I do to prevent scarring?

Hello Anonymous-

I'm not positive what you are asking about, but I'm going to guess it is pityriasis rosea. Have you seen a health care provider to get a diagnosis? If it is pityriasis rosea, sunlight may help a little bit if you don't overdo it: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000871.htm. We have some information on this as well: https://www.empowher.com/condition/pityriasis-rosea

It is thought that this condition is caused by a virus. Treatments focus on symptom control and not so much on the cosmetic side of it, although this can be quite bothersome, especially for those like you with a dark complexion. Sometimes antiviral drugs can shorten the duration a bit, so that could decrease the spread of the rash and patches somewhat.

Again, I'm not positive exactly what you are asking about, but this is a common issue in children and young adults. Your best bet is to see a dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. Another good source of information is Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pityriasis-rosea/DS00720

If I have totally missed the point with my answer, please write again and let me know! Thank you.

No that is exactly what I am referring to. I apologize for not being more specific. I was told by an ER nurse doctor that it is pityriasis rosea but I made an appointment to see the dermatologist on the 3rd of May. But I'm 99% positive that this is what I have. Thanks for your input. I really hope these spots clear up before my vacation at the end of June :(

I hope so, too. Please let us know how it goes.
