Had a friend tell me recently, he regularly downs two Starbucks coffees a day. I have to admit I'll grab one from time to time but for the sake of the people around me, I have sworn off caffeine. So when I do have a jolt, I REALLY feel it -- which got me wondering about just how much caffeine is in some of my favorite beverages. Here's the breakdown:
Coffee, generic brewed 8 oz. 133 (range: 102-200) (16 oz. = 266)
Starbucks Brewed Coffee (Grande) 16 oz. 320
Tea, brewed 8 oz. 53 (range: 40-120)
Vault 12 oz. 71 (20 oz. = 118)
Pepsi 12 oz. 38 (20 oz. = 63)
Coca-Cola Classic 12 oz. 35 (20 oz. = 58)

There are some benefits to caffeine, albeit in moderation. Most of us like our coffee in the morning to wake us up. Some of us drank pots of coffee while cramming for exams, both to stay awake and to kick our gray matter. Sometimes, during long training runs or events, there are some products containing caffeine that distance runners will take for a quick boost of energy. Oddly enough, that cup of coffee or espresso after dinner may feel both relaxing and stimulating, and very sociable. What's really weird is that the after-dinner coffee makes me sleepy (I know, I'm odd).
I have only 1 cup of coffee/day, but not daily. When I gave up coffee, and also cut back on non-herbal tea, I had withdrawal symptoms for days. The headaches, fatigue and sense of feeling light headed were definitely not fun. But, doing so is how I can now enjoy my occasional cup of coffee, versus crave it, and it doesn't feel like a "jolt" to my system. It just feels comforting, especially when shared with my darling groom or a friend.
And, my favorite aisle at the market: the coffee aisle. It smells so good.
