Hi Dr. Klein, Why is it men don't listen and are shocked when the marriage is over? Is it simply denial??

How do I tell my husband that I need some just-for-me time without hurting his feelings?

Dr. Klein,
This past fall my mother-in-law moved in with my wife and me. She will have been out of work for 3 years, so with the best intentions in mind, we offered to let her stay with us while she gets back on her feet. Seven months later, she is still unemployed and living with us.
We are basically newly weds (only 2 years this week) and are expecting our first child this coming fall. Little did we know how much pressure her living with us would put on our marriage. The time she has been there, has literally been the worst time in our entire relationship. We are not as intimate as often as we used to be. We are not communicating as well, resulting in arguments. And it has gotten to the point where I don't even want to go home at times.
How do we resolve this? My marriage is the most important thing in the world to me. We have talked about the issues and are united about putting our marriage first and getting her to leave. How do we go about that without alienating her?
Thank you!
