I have had Thrush for 6 months, having tried over the counter pessaries and oral product (this caused an allergic reaction). My GP has advised me not to use flucanazole due to the allergic reaction and that she has not other oral alternatives that would be suitable so I have to use pessaries for 6 months which I have used for 1 month but are very unpleasant to use and has not worked as yet. My GP has been in contact with a gynaecologist to see if there are any alternatives but has been advised there are none. This has been going on for so long impacting on my working life, love life and expensive in laundry/prescriptions etc its really getting me down. I last spoke to my GP 1 week ago on phone and she advised me to exclude wheat from my diet for 2 wks and see if that helped. One week and no change yet.
I am also suffering from night sweats 4 out of 7 nights per weeks (I am 45).

mary j,
February 8, 2010 - 4:02amsorry to hear you have been suffering with thrush for so long. i myself know how frusrating and upsetting it can be to hear from your doctor there is nothing else for you to try. i had a urine infection back in november and was given antibiotics to clear it up which they did but after taking them i was experiencing severe itchiness outside and inside my vagina and was really inflamed. i went back to my doctor and she said i had thrush and gave me flucanozole. after a week there was still no improvement so i went back to her and she tested me for std's which were all clear and said to try smothering myself with live yoghurt which i tried and still didnt help. i then got myself some pessaries to try. after using 3 and still no improvement i started to get really down about it. like yourself it has been very hard to live a normal life with work and love life etc.. last night i went to the hospital because it was so bad i couldnt even sit down. i had an examination and was told ive had an allergic reaction to thrush, apparently it doesnt happen often but it can. ive been given some ointment to reduce the swelling and stop the friction between my underwear as this is very painful. after suffering for 3 months hopefully this will be the end of it. as for yourself you should ask your doctor to refer you to a gynaecologist asap or go to the hospital, its unfair you've had to suffer this long. i really do hope you get to the bottom of it soon. if you have any questions id be happy to answer.

Mary J,
If you have genital thrush, this is more commonly known as a vaginal yeast infection. Thrush is usually described as a yeast infection in the mucus membranes of the mouth. Have you been diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection?
Do your doctor(s) know the cause of this genital thrust/ vaginal yeast infection? Do you have a compromised immune system?
Have you been diagnosed with the exact type of organism (fungi) that is causing this infection? It is important to use the right type of anti-fungal medication to properly treat your specific infection; more research is being published that "one size fits all" yeast medicines and antifungal medications do not work for everyone.
If you are allergic to Fluconazole, has your doctor talked about another type of antifungal medication or antibiotic that you can use? (Again, depending on the exact organism causing the genital thrust/infection).
Please know that a chronic yeast infection can signify an underlying medical condition, or that your current yeast infection is not properly diagnosed and treated. Please see your doctor for a proper diagnosis, or seek a second opinion. Please also see your doctor (or, another doctor) to rule out any underlying medical conditions causing your infection/thrust to reoccur or become chronic.
Let us know if you need any assistance in finding another doctor, and let us know if there is any additional information we can provide.
