We all know how difficult it can be to keep the kids entertained when travelling. It is the part of the holiday that many of us do not look forward to, and something which can easily become very dangerous due to all the excitement.
Last year
When booking our holiday, we decided to drive ourselves to the airport. To be honest, we couldn't afford the luxury of an airport transfer so we didn’t really have a choice, but looking back on the experience, it is definitely something I would save up for now. Although there was no problem getting to the airport car park, it was getting from there onwards which caused us issues.
On safe arrival, we unloaded the car of all our suitcases, hand luggage and the kids. I am sure you can imagine, or have experienced, the struggle we faced when trying to juggle everything, including our very excited boys. It was their first time on an aeroplane and there was no way of controlling their anticipation.
As you may know, when parking at the airport you receive a free shuttle service to get you to the terminal you are flying from. Although the shuttle bus was on time, the bus itself was not very child friendly and there was a lack of safety features. This meant our boys were strapped on to our laps using a normal seat belt, which didn’t feel very safe at all; luckily it was only a short trip to the terminal.
Not only this, but there was a lack of space for our luggage and the driver was very impatient in waiting for us to secure it and ourselves before moving on, all making for a stressful start to our journey, an option which we wouldn’t choose again.
Once at the terminal we faced struggle number 2; loading our luggage onto a trolley, a bit of a handful with the boys, causing even more pre-holiday stress. Here, we also realised that in rushing to get off of the shuttle bus we had lost one of our suitcases. Luckily, there was a lovely lady at the check-in in desk who managed to retrieve it back, but it was something that could have been easily avoided.
This year
This time, we saved the added extra in order to afford a chauffeured airport transfer. Sounds very posh, but it wasn’t, and not that expensive either. This way we managed to start off our journey being able to relax and not having to worry about our kids not being safe. The transfer allowed us to hire car seats for the boys, giving us the chance to focus on keeping them entertained on the long journey to the airport. There was no struggle with juggling the kids and our luggage as we were driven straight to the terminal and our driver helped us unload our luggage.
We couldn't have asked for a better, safer journey. We had the luxurious and carefree journey we needed to start our holiday off with a bang, and when we were not looking forward to the journey home, we were safe in the knowledge that the transfer back was waiting for us. It is definitely something I would recommend to all, especially those with young children like us.
