About 10 years ago I started doing extra work in movies, commercials and instructional videos. It is fun, doesn’t pay that well, not very glamorous, but always interesting. It is show biz!
For some time I had a gig once a month. The last work I had was for a dental instructional video. Like I said not very glamorous, I played a woman having a tooth ache. Who knew there is a demand for middle aged, menopausal women?
Timothy Hutton is in town with his series, Leverage. I watched this show and thought it was entertaining but that was before they started filming season 2 here and won’t even give me a call back. The show is a bit slick and hip and maybe menopausal women aren’t right for background, but please, why not? If Timothy’s show doesn’t get picked up for a third season I know the reason. He needed some menopausal aged women background actors for the mass appeal.
Harrison Ford is in town making a movie.I put my game face on and went for the casting call. I have had 6 call backs and 3 postponements. Again this morning in my email and on my home phone and my cell phone, were messages that I was chosen to work in the film. This afternoon I was notified once again, that some one else was cast.
Show Biz is all about rejection, and I can take it, I really can, but this is Harrison Ford! The movie has been shooting for over a month. How many more opportunities will I have to be on set with Harrison? I am getting impatient. The weather is turning warm and I have a hot flash issue. Will I be able to keep my cool and my make-up on if I am on set with Harrison? Keep a positive thought for me, please.

Alysiak, you look great!!
May 20, 2009 - 5:27pmIt is amazing what a make-up artist can do for me. Yes I was stuck in some bottlenecks twice by each of the productions in town and not a call back, which of course irritates me.
You do have to have a thick skin for the Biz. Last year I was rejected for a Halloween comercial for hands, that they said my hands weren't knarly and old looking enough. The casting call was for women over age 50 with veiny hands. Let's see no job but thanks? That's show biz.

Gnarly and veiny hands, good grief! I guess they just didn't want to pop for the makeup artist, lol! Oh, well, you just never know. The underdog seems to win (like on Idol tonight).

Back in the day, I was a high fashion model - the shortest one in the cadre, but still good enough to work for a couple of major houses. My face was even used as a fashion photographer's logo.
These days, not only does my body display the ravages of menopause (this darned weight issue) and, well, age, actually, my driver's license alone makes me look like some lost alien from another planet.
At least you're very photogenic, and parts are parts. My son used to get work as an extra, but wasn't willing to do what it takes to get his SAG card (he's too sensitive about rejection). Nonetheless, we can still tease him about the flash of his face in a few scenes in a totally ridiculous comedy made with Lyle Lovett. He'll be on a CD cover, soon saw the photos, don't know the band.
Perhaps if you had carpentry skills, Harrison Ford's people would take notice? After all, he was a carpenter when he got his movie breakthrough, LOL!
Were you caught in the traffic block while they were filming? I read about it in the news online.

I'm there with you. My son had quite a few parts where he was put "on hold" only to be told they chose someone else. C'est la vie in the entertainment biz!

Haralee, this is hilarious. I have my fingers crossed for you -- and I'm sure Harrison Ford thinks midlife is very, very sexy. Good luck! Let us know!
