I've been living with PCOS since I was 19 years old, I am now 30 and it's still here with me. When I was first diagnosed it was very hard to find any kind of information on the subject, but now there's so much it's hard to decide the right course of action. For me, PCOS keeps me overweight (100lbs to be exact) and with some excess hair (mostly on my tummy). I can shave the hair, but I cannot seem to lose the wieght. I feel hopeless, like a failure. I went to a gym and went on the gym diet and after a year of 5-6 days going to the gym and working out at home I had lost 12 pounds. I felt like such a loser and not yay a loser of weght. I felt like I had let myself down. I just got laid off from my job, so now there's no going to doctors for help or nutritionist. I am at a loss. I feel like I'm cursed, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's like why me? But enough feeling sorry for myself...I bought a bicycle and I'm going to start using it everyday (tried walking but my knees hurt too much). I will find the right treatment and beat this thing. So I'm off to ride my bike. Good luck to all in your endeavors today. May we all find peace.

Hello! I'm 25 years old and I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. I've had symptoms of it since I was a teenager. It wasn't until I switched doctors that I was given the correct diagnosis for my symptoms. The most concerning part was my rapid, unexplained weight gain over the past 2 years. I was put on Metformin 3 times a day to regulate my sugar levels and to aid with weight loss. Metformin has basically regulated my weight but it remains a struggle to drop it. I've been fluctuating for the past few months, but at least I'm not gaining. I recently began a daily work out routine and I'm on the road to better eating habits. I too at times feel like a failure since weight loss is such a struggle, but you have to remind yourself that it is 10 times harder for someone with PCOS to lose weight and it is going to take a longer time to see results. Continue using the bike and think positive thoughts! I wish you the best of luck. :)

I've also had PCOS since 16 and have battled with it for as long as I know. One thing I noticed that helped me lose weight was by cutting down on carbohydrates, especially rice and using whole wheat noodles, and trying to walk at least 30 mins a day. For faster results, although it messed with my period timing, I tried one of those dietary teas and it worked because my form of PCOS makes me retain a lot of water. The only bad thing about losing weight that way is that unless you continue to take the tea, you will then gain the weight back really quickly, and it makes my stomach really hurt in the mornings and evenings.

Thank you, finding this article and the responses were very encouraging. I know that I'm not alone with how I'm feeling. I was surprised that so many people I knew had PCOS and I didn't find out until I started to talk more about my own symptoms. Did you see that there is television show coming up about PCOS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9WyXet2_vc. Very exciting! I think it will help create much needed awareness about the condition.

The biggest thing is balancing blood sugar levels which is also the hardest(to me anyways lol) and bad carbs. If you can stand it the south beach doet or a variation on it really works well. The first 2 weeks of that diet you'll see alot of weight loss because the main point of the first 2 weeks is to bring all your levels back to the starting point. My one complaint is I can't stick to it... I love bread way too much!! LOL Cheese toast is my favorite snack in the world and I want my sarah lee honey wheat and some real cheese not lowfat lol. I found this video on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfxYjzIqffM and have treid to contact the young woman. Her journey thru PCOS is amazing and I would love to know what she did because obviously it worked.

I gave up the idea of children a long time ago. My husband would prolly like at least one I think, but I've grown so acustom to this disease and it's limits that I don't really have that desire anymore. If I'm meant to have kids, I will leave it in God's capable hands. In the end I have to just trust He knows what He's doing. On a happier not I've lost almost 15 pounds! Stay strong everyone and just keep pushing ahead. It's all we can do sometimes.

I understand your pain, I to have PCOS. The best advise I have for you is to have a OBGYN that is educate in PCOS and if not see an IVF Dr and they will be able to help you and find an OB that they know can give you treatment. Willo... do you plain on having any children? Seeing that you are 30 you need to let the Dr know. I'm 36 and I found out 5 yrs ago that I had PCOS but, I've had sign's since I was 19 -20 to. I have one son and he is 11. I got pregnant on my own but, it took 1 1/2 yrs. I'm just currently seeking serious treatment to control the PCOS so it don't control me...!!! Don't give up... I did and it took over my life for 4 yrs. I found support here... I'm stronger and more aware of my health issues and what Dr to see and what ?'s to ask and treatment opinion's I have. Stay strong and God Bless!

Hi, I have PCOS...had problems conceiving and miscarried a lot. I was able to have 2 children and finally had to have a partial hysterectomy. My cysts are killing me with pain and the bloating is hurting sooo bad. I'm scared to have them removed because I'm already 100 lbs over weight and the excess hair under my chin has mulitplied. I have a strong family history of ovarian cancer and am worried I might get it if I keep them.

Anon,
I'm so sorry that you've dealt with PCOS for so long and that it's caused you so much trouble (though I am joyful for you that you were able to have two children!)
I'm very concerned right now about your bloating and your pain. Is your doctor recommending that you have your ovaries removed?
With a strong family history of ovarian cancer, you surely know what a silent, nasty disease it is. Might it be that after you had your ovaries removed that you'd be able to get the weight under control and perhaps deal with the hormone changes with bio-identical hormone therapy?
How old are you, Anon? When was the last time you saw your doctor about this?
