Have you heard about this female college student (majoring in Women's Studies), who is auctioning off her virginity, so that she can pay for college? So far, she's received many offers..some for more than 2.5 million dollars.
I assume most of the women replying to this would be appalled (to say it mildly), so I'll ask a provocative question: do you think there is anything positive that can come from this? If a male wants to part with over a million dollars for a one-night-stand, and a young woman wants to go to college...they both get what they want. (Assume the best scenario: no one gets hurt or infected).
I'm just curious if you think this happens often? This woman does not think she is demeaning herself. I'll keep my opinion to myself, as I am wondering if anyone can think of a reason why this would be a good idea??

I'll be the devil's advocate here.
She's majoring in women's studies, so I'm guessing she's neither a lightweight nor someone who sees herself as merely an object that can be bought or sold. She said her sister spent three weeks as a prostitute and paid for her education with the money she earned.
My theory? This could be an experiment for a paper she's writing, inspired by her sister's activities (if those are true). She is trying to get at the exact reactions and philosophies we have all had, with a focus on the very thing Coach Virginia honed in on: We are either making progress or we aren't. This sort of thing either offends us or it doesn't; we either see it as her body or we don't. She's found a way to get right to the heart of the matter, and the articles, blogs and emails she's getting give her plenty of material on all sides of the question to write her paper around.
Now that's brilliant, if true.

Women want respect but women are willing to sell their bodies to the highest bid! Let's make up our minds, please!!!! The action of one greedy virgin will continue to tarnish the image women have tried to change. Are we sexual objects YES or NO? If we are, then our bodies can be sold to anyone who can pay for it. The problem is, how much is too much or too little? Our society thinks virginity is not of any value, but hypocritically we are willing to sell it for $2.5mil. Let's decide once and for all if virginity is worth ANYTHING!

No. Of course not! I just meant that as an aside. The major issue, naturally, is that this is the self prostitution of a woman who must regard herself as something to be sold and any man who would pay for her virginity is a sick pervert!
January 13, 2009 - 9:03pmI feel that this is a sad anti feminist act, worthy of something from the dark ages. It bothers me greatly that a person could sell herself in this way. Please disregard my earlier comment...it matters little what she looks like.

Wait a minute, Anonymous, are you saying that if she was pretty, this would be okay and the person willing to pay $2.5 M for deflowering this young woman would not be a "wierdo"?

I think it's crazy!!!! And who are these wierdos who will pay for the virginity of a woman who isn't even all that pretty???
January 13, 2009 - 4:55pmPersonally, I think it's a sad day for women't liberation!
It's just another example of the "pornification" of our society.

I don't know..... I can't think of any good reason to prostitute myself.....

Honestly, I a little bit wish I would have thought of this idea. I would definitely consider trading my first experience with a boyfriend who I'm no longer with for 2.5 million dollars. In fact, I would consider trading it for 1 million.
Since this is a contest and she could end up with someone crazy, I would suggest she perform a background check, meet in a public place to make sure the individual seems normal and safe, and have him take an STD/HIV test.
I'm sure many will disagree with me, but I think this idea is kind of brilliant as long as it is executed just as brilliantly.
