My Mother suffered from diverticulitis for several years and I wanted to share a story that saved her life. I call this in her own words since I wrote as she told me this story.
I have suffered from diverticulicis for more that 10 years..I doctored with a rectal specialist in my town. I had colonoscopy every year but still would have almost every other month severe pain and high fever. The doctor kept on giving me antibiotics and after taking them about three weeks later the pain and fever was back. I even ended up in the hospital twice on an IV to get the antibiotics in me faster. The last time I ended up in the hospital my Doctor told me I would have to have surgery. I prepared myself for having part of my bowel taken out. When I went back to the Doctor he said no surgery it would not help. I said the pain and fever are coming back. He said I will give you a prescription.
Well thank God that my son worked at a hospital out of town. He spoke to a Doctor there about me and was told to get another Doctor. My kids took care of me and had me see a physician at the Cleveland Clinic. Well they did a colonoscopy and operated about 4 days later. They removed 12 inches from my bowel. The surgeon said it looked like I swallowed a firecracker and it exploded in me. If I would have messed around I could of died.
This is just a story to let you know if you are not satisfied and think you are still having problems after years of doctors care, get another opinion!

Miscortes, thanks so much for sharing your mother's story.
I don't think we can read too many stories like this. They are frightening and yet they teach us to trust our instincts. We hear it over and over again, but it's hard to truly believe that we have to be our own advocate when it comes to our bodies and our health care.
So glad your mother got care at Cleveland Clinic and that she is fine now. I hope the surgery has solved all the problems? Please be sure to come back and give us an update!
And good kids!!! for getting your mom to another doctor. Way to go!
