We have all heard so many depressing stories about young girls having babies in secret and either killing the baby or leaving it somewhere, where it may or may not be found.
Today I read the story of a 17 year old young woman who had her baby alone, at home, after hiding her entire pregnancy for fear her mother would kick her out.
Xochitl Parra gave birth early in the morning, alone at home, and immediately walked (WALKED!!) to the hospital with her brand newborn who had the placenta still attacked in order to receive care.
Makes me want to hug this brave girl for doing the right thing!

Thanks for sharing this story Susan. Another alternative for (usually) young mothers here in Phoenix is called the Safe Haven program where mothers may anonymously drop off their children if they are unable to care for them. The program was started about seven years ago, and in covering local news for several years in the Valley, I know of a few occasions where women actually used the service. To me, any resource seems to be a good one and believe it's been enacted in other cities. For more info, visit
