We all want to be in the perfect relationship. Having a doting partner, you can consistently rely on is often the dream for many young couples. While relationship glitches happen from time to time, there are a few warning signs to look out for that might indicate an unhealthy relationship. If you constantly notice the following signs, it may be time to seek help.
Your Partner Tries to Cut You Off from Friends Or Family
It is one thing to miss a family gathering once in awhile, or to not go to a party with your friends because you are having a date night with your partner. However, if they get mad, or even abusive, every time you have plans with family or friends, and tries to end your relationships with these people in your life, it may indicate a problem. Isolation is a key to manipulative behavior and keeps you reliant on a less than supportive partner.
Your Partner Makes Fun of You or Mocks You
Occasional teasing may be fine, as long as you can handle it. If your partner is constantly making fun or mocking you, it may signal an unhealthy relationship. If the mocking or teasing is cruel, hurtful, or degrading, you need to take this into consideration. There is a big difference between playful teasing and putting someone down all the time. Consider how often it happens and if it can be reciprocated on your end or if it won’t be tolerated at all.
Absence of Trust
When your partner tells you they are going out with friends, do you believe it? Or, do you wish you could follow or somehow check up on them to make sure they are telling the truth? You need to be able to trust the person you are with. If your gut is telling you that they are lying to you, cheating on you, or otherwise can't be trusted, ask yourself why. If they always assume the same things about you whenever you leave or charge these with baseless accusations, it may also be something to consider addressing.
Your Partner Doesn't Take 'No' For an Answer
Even when you are in a relationship, it is ok if you feel you need to say no to sexual advances for any reason. Perhaps you are not feeling well, or are exhausted. If you've told your partner that tonight is just not a good night for that, did they respect your wishes? If not, this not only signals an unhealthy relationship, it may also mean you need to consult with a sexual assault lawyer or physician, especially if things turn violent.
We all know that the perfect relationship does not exist. All couples will occasionally disagree or have an issue. In healthy relationships, these issues can easily be resolved. If you are finding that you are having any of the issues mentioned above, or any other issues that signal a problem, it is important to remember that help is available.
