My passion for EmpowHER comes from the lifelong struggles that my wife, Geri, has had with endometriosis as well as the subsequent challenges she had getting pregnant. Thanks to her strength in advocating for herself and the blessing of finding an ob/gyn who dealt in fertility, we now have two teenage sons.

My grandparents were married for 62 years and were like parents to me. I was very close to them. Three years ago my grandmother passed away on a Thursday morning and I spent the following two nights sleeping next to my grandfather in bed. Until the moment he went into cardiac arrest while lying next to me, I had never advocated for anyone's health before. I had no place to turn for answers, except the Internet. I've got mostly women in my life. My work is dedicated to them and all the other women who keep us healthy, happy and alive.

I had been overweight most of my life. At age 41, I decided to stop the insanity of lifelong yo-yo dieting and pursue a more long-term solution to my weight problem, which was to seek out a doctor to perform weight loss lap band surgery. I ended up losing just over 100 lbs over a year and a half. When Michelle King Robson approached me about joining EmpowHER.com, I jumped at the opportunity to join a company that is committed to improving access to care for all women.

My love for art and computers lead me on the path to Web and graphic design. Throughout the years I've designed and worked on hundreds of sites. Most were fun or good for my career, but none of them truly helped others. I feel lucky to have found EmpowHER, where I can do what I love and make a difference in someone's life.

I lost my mother to a rare brain dementia when she was 52. As the dementia progressed and we struggled to understand what was happening to her we craved access to clinical information and experiential testimonials. Ever since then, I've wanted to support efforts to put that information into the hands of patients and their families.

I've had ankle problems most of my life. I was 15 years old when I had my first ankle surgery and have had complications with it since. My ankle worsened as arthritis set in which lead to a complete ankle fusion in 2006. When faced with the life-altering decision of an ankle fusion, I realized that I had no one to talk to who had actually had the procedure and found limited research online about ankle fusion. EmpowHER has given me a voice to share my ankle fusion story with others who are faced with the same decision.

I had a high-risk pregnancy and my doctor told me I needed a C-section. I was surprised that the doctor's office did not have any printed information about C-sections, and I had to gain most of my knowledge from asking friends who'd had one. Still, while researching on my own, I was surprised by how much I didn't know about this process. I also wasn't aware or prepared for the pain I had immediately after the surgery or in the months following it. EmpowHER answers these kind of questions and more for women. I'm thrilled to have a part in making a difference in the health and well-being of other women.

Although, I have been blessed with good health, not all of the women in my life can say the same. What I've learned from their experiences is that a person needs to be proactive in regards to her health including eating a healthy diet, exercising, staying informed on the latest health risks and monitoring her health through regular check ups. Most importantly she needs to be brave when a condition arises and tackle it head on.

Most of my life I've been surrounded by women so it's no surprise that I ended up working at a website for women. I kind of fell into web design in college when a student organization I belonged to wanted to create a website. I volunteered to figure it out and ended up liking it so much that I declared my major soon after. I have enjoyed working at EmpowHER because it allows me to do something I love and I get the extra satisfaction that my work can actually help people improve their health.

By working at EmpowHER I have learned the importance of good health and advocacy. As I edit videos of doctors, health experts and women of all ages sharing their information and stories, I have been able to share this information with my family and friends. EmpowHER opened a door in my mind that allows me to understand why it's important to know the changes my body goes through as I get older and how to best advocate for my own health.

My doctor gave me the bad news three years ago. I am pre-diabetic and I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. "If you were fifty, I would say that you're probably going to die when you are seventy," he said. "But you are thirty, so you are probably going to die when you are fifty."
My wife and I have three kids and I don't want to leave them without a father. So I bought a bicycle and I've been riding ever since. I've dropped 40 pounds and my blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol have come down considerably. But there is work to do. My goal is to lose another 46 pounds by May of 2010. I want to receive my diploma weighing 200 pounds, a weight I haven't seen in over 12 years.
