Diagnosed more than 60 years ago with diabetes, Jean now shares her story.
Jean:
Hi, my name is Jeanie Borden. They discovered I had diabetes in 1948. I have had diabetes for 60 years. I have been on insulin for 60 years. I went on the insulin pump, the second model that came out, that’s been 26 years ago.
When I was a child I became extremely ill. At that time they really didn’t take you to the doctors very often. So I was ill for almost a year and lost a great amount of weight before they realized something was wrong I became very ill. I was vomiting and they thought something else was wrong so, they took me to the doctor.
He thought I had appendicitis. Well, they put me in the hospital and naturally, when you go on a hospital they did the blood work. Well, when they did the blood work they discovered that I was diabetic. My blood sugar was extremely high. Well then they thought they are going to have to do the surgery. So they gave me almost a 100 units of insulin and proceeded to do the operation, which turned out it was an intestinal thing instead, but I then went into a coma.
I was in coma for about a week and, I think after that I came out very slowly. I was in the hospital probably two weeks. But, at that time when you got diabetes and they set me home, they told my mother, “Well, here is a list of things.” He said, “Just make sure she doesn’t eat sugar.”
Well, on the notes then there was a lot of carbohydrates and lot of other things which I later came to find out. So that’s initially how I found out that I got diabetes and when I got it.
