Charred wood is a concrete that carries a fine black surface produced by applying fire in a controlled manner. This ancient technique, popularly known in Japan as *shou sugi ban,* ensures enhanced durability of the wood by making it resistant to moisture, insect attack, and fire. The surface consists of a carbonized grainy texture with far-reaching contrast so that these grains stand out in great depth and boast of a smoky, elegant finish.
