Pros and Cons of Dental Veneers

By March 22, 2024 - 7:31am

Veneering, lumineers, tooth covering, and onlay. In this article, we shall discuss them, including whether or not they are harmful to one's health and the cost. Veneers are thin onlays that range in thickness from 0.2 mm (as an eye lens) to 0.5 mm (veneers) and are used to cover the outside dental surface, as well as part of the interior dental surface.

Veneers become a popular cosmetic dentistry solution because they can easily improve the appearance of teeth. They cannot replace a missing tooth or fix an irregular bite, but they can hide non-aesthetic dental problems. A veneer can be made to resemble like a genuine tooth while also appearing as white as in a commercial.

Veneers’ main purpose is aesthetics
The veneer production method first arose in the late 1930s, introduced by Charles Pincus, a US doctor who treated Hollywood celebrities and made dazzling smiles before to filming. Due to a lack of adequate adhesive materials, veneers could only stay on teeth for a few days. This technology can be compared to the past. A well-known "Hollywood smile" also appeared in the past.

Basic indications for veneering:
- Color change in a tooth treated for caries problems (pulp canal therapy)
- Taking antibiotics during natural tooth formation (tetracycline), fluorosis, and hypoplasia
- Dental torsiversion (crooked or reversed teeth) or dental erosion (short teeth)
- Trema and diastemas (huge interdental spaces)
- Gingival smile (when most of the gingiva is visible) Skin and muscles of the lower face have a low tone. Veneers are placed on grinding teeth to open the bite.

What is better: veneers or crowns?
Veneers and crowns are two distinct constructs that serve separate tasks. Veneers improve the appearance of teeth and smiles, whilst tooth crowns are used to repair decaying teeth caused by caries and other issues. Crowns restore tooth function and safeguard against further caries processes. The doctor decides whether to employ veneers or crowns for frontal teeth based on objective indications and contraindications.

Veneer counter-indications:
- Closed bite (abnormal bite)
- Bruxism
- Insufficient oral hygiene or, to be more exact, lack of hygiene.

Is it feasible to apply veneers if your bite is abnormal? Is it possible to place veneers on a tooth that has no nerves? The final decision is made by the doctor. However, if a patient has an irregular bite, improper dental prosthesis might ruin the structure and result in a maxillo-temporal joint problem.

Which veneers are better?
The answer is straightforward: they are ceramic veneers, hybrid ceramics, or feldspathic ceramics. These materials accurately imitate the color and texture of actual teeth. They fit the teeth surface with high precision, which composite veneers cannot do.

What goes on with teeth under veneers?
If a veneer is properly applied, the teeth beneath it do not change. It is critical to maintain dental hygiene and remember that veneers cannot be removed and replaced. They can only be replaced.

Can veneers be whitened?
Unfortunately, no. The micro prostheses cannot be whitened; instead, onlays are substituted with lighter-colored structures.

Veneer lifetime
The lifetime of a veneer is 10-15 years. How can it be extended? Maintain comprehensive oral hygiene. The interface between the artificial substance and tooth enamel is a high-risk location for caries. An oral irrigator and/or a dental clinic hygienist make excellent assistants in this situation. Avoid utilizing foods heavy in coloring chemicals or foods that are sour.

Veneer overload can result in chipping. Protect your teeth from injury by not cracking nutshells or attempting to open bottles with them.

With bruxism, it is recommended that you wear a particular mouth guard at night. It can also increase the life of veneers.
