Who Needs Temporary Veneers and What for?

By April 12, 2023 - 4:33am

Between the treatment of the surface of the teeth and the installation of beautiful permanent porcelain veneers, there is some time required - a week or a month. During this period, patients are fitted with temporary plastic veneers. Their main feature is fragility.

What Problems Do Temporary Veneers Solve?
Temporary veneers are necessary:
- To protect the enamel;
- Perform a corrective function;
- Close the treated (grinded) tooth surface, which doesn’t look aesthetically pleasant;
- Protect the tooth against hypersensitivity to cold and hot products associated with tooth grinding (unpleasant sensations will completely disappear after the installation of permanent veneers);
- Get used to the overlays;
- Try on a beautiful smile.

In the latter case, temporary dental veneers are a test: if the patient is satisfied with everything, you can install permanent structures; if not, the necessary changes will be applied on the way, so the patient will not waste money and time.

During a follow-up visit to the doctor, temporary veneers are replaced with permanent ones.

Temporary veneers have disadvantages:
- Loose fit, as a result of which saliva penetrates under them;
- Lack of strong fixation;
- A simplified form that differs significantly from the form of permanent, laboratory-made veneers;
- They are exposed to the influence of external factors (easily dyed by food and drinks containing dyes, can fall off if not fixed properly).

They cannot be used for a long time, but temporary veneers perform their main function of protecting the tooth from harmful effects until the installation of permanent structures.

In the short period until permanent veneers are made, the enamel will not get stained.

Proper installation of temporary veneers allows the patient to talk and smile without embarrassment and worries about the impression being made.

Contraindications for Temporary Veneers
Veneering has contraindications: tooth decay and inflammatory processes since the situation will worsen after the installation of overlays. In this regard, the doctor prescribes an X-ray exam.

Installation of Temporary Veneers
Temporary veneers are placed directly after tooth preparation. For installation, standard equipment and a silicone template are used. After polymerization, the structures are not removed; correction and polishing are performed in the oral cavity. Veneers are adjusted so that the speech is not affected, and it is very convenient to talk with them. The shade is not specially selected; a neutral option is used. Aesthetics, in this case, is not in the first place. Reliability is more important.

Fixation of temporary overlays is not durable so there are no problems when removing them. The substitute for veneers often peels off easily. To restore fixation, you should contact your dentist. The repeated procedure will take no more than twenty minutes. If the patient has an allergy, it is necessary to warn the doctor about it. Plastic can be replaced with a special composite mass.

The Safety Rules for the Use of Temporary Veneers
Temporary veneers are quite fragile because they are not designed to undergo significant loads as the permanent overlays do. During their use, you should:
- Chew and bite carefully;
- Eliminate solid foods from the menu;
- Gently use a toothbrush (the dentist will tell you how to properly brush your teeth);
- Use dental floss.

Is It Painful to Install Temporary Veneers?
Installing veneers is not associated with discomfort.

The discomfort can rarely occur, only in the case of an inflammatory process that was already ongoing at the time of their installation. In this case, treatment will be required. Such situations almost never occur, as the dentist will see the inflammation on the X-ray during the preparatory checkup and suggest that you undergo a course of treatment before preparing the teeth.
