American Airlines is offering a flexible booking policy that allows you to change or cancel your flight at any time, depending on the fare type you purchased.
Depending on the fare type you purchased, your booking options may be more flexible than others. If you paid for a cheaper fare, you may be able to make changes or cancel your ticket (depending on the route), but you may have to pay a fee. On the other hand, if you bought a refundable ticket, there won't be any additional charges when changing your flight. Just let us know that you want to change your itinerary before departure and we'll get it done.
If another airline is offering a lower fare for the same exact itinerary, just submit a request within 24 hours of making your American Airlines reservation and we'll credit or refund the difference in price.

Generally, fare rules are tied to the type of fare that you purchase. For example, the Basic Economy fare can’t be changed after 24 hours of booking a flight. If you purchased a Basic Economy ticket and want to change your flight, American does not allow changes.

Though they are non-refundable, American doesn't allow changes of any sort to Basic Economy tickets, including your travel dates or destination city.
