By February 9, 2018 - 10:27am

Liposuction is a popular procedure for those looking to shed off a few unwanted fat in areas like the stomach, thighs, and back. Though liposuction may seem like an easy solution, there many common myths about the procedure that we must address. Learning what’s fact and what’s fiction when it comes to liposuction will help you determine if the surgery is something you should even consider. If you are a plastic surgeon and run your own clinic and facing problems how to take increase your patients click here.

Myth #1: Liposuction is Designed for Weight Loss

This is the most common myth about liposuction – that it can be used as a weight loss tool. If you are trying to lose weight, liposuction is actually not the procedure for you. The best liposuction candidate is someone at a fairly stable weight, with areas of exercise resistant fatty deposits; someone who is already within 30 percent of the range of their desired weight.

Liposuction is best thought of as a contouring procedure. It removes extra fat that won’t go away with diet or exercise, giving you the body shape you want. If you want to lose weight, your best bet is to change your diet and exercise.

Myth #2: Liposuction Treats Cellulite
Another myth about liposuction is that it treats cellulite – sorry to break it to you but this surgical procedure does not affect the appearance of cellulite. In fact, according to The American Academy of Dermatology, liposuction may actually worsen the appearance of cellulite by creating more depressions in the skin. Cellulite is the fat right below the surface of the skin, it typically looks bumpy and uneven because the fat pushes through the connective tissue. Many of us think it’s unattractive; however cellulite does not present any health concerns.

Myth #3: Liposuction Staves Off Fat Indefinitely
Liposuction is not a long-lasting solution. Pregnancy, age, and weight gain after the procedure can alter the original results. Even though some of the fat cells have been removed surgically, the remaining fat cells can increase in size as a result of unhealthy eating or lack of exercise.

Myth #4: Liposuction Doesn’t Hurt

It honestly varies from each person’s experience. It will depend on your overall health, areas treated, and how quickly you can recuperate. Other factors can include how much liposuction is done and how many areas are being treated. Most of the times patients are usually back to work one week after liposuction. But if it’s a large liposuction procedure, expect a little longer time healing.

Myth #5: Liposuction and Tummy Tucks are the Same

While these surgeries are often performed together, liposuction and tummy tucks are not the same thing. Liposuction treats fat pockets, while tummy tucks address excess skin and fat around the stomach while tightening the abdominal wall. Liposuction is often used in a tummy tuck operation.

Myth #6: Liposuction is Only for Women

Liposuction has been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in recent years. While some people think that only women are candidates for the surgery, it’s long been one of the more popular procedures with men. The most commonly treated areas for men include the abdomen, love handles, and chest (male breasts).

Myth #7: Liposuction Isn’t Considered Surgery

There are similar non-surgical fat removal treatments such as CoolSculpt, but liposuction is not one of them. If you choose to undergo liposuction, you will receive either general anesthesia or heavy sedation. Local anesthesia and light sedation is also available as an option. It typically takes up to a year for final results to be appear as swelling resolved and you’ll need about a week before you can get back to your daily activities
