What type of yoga do you practice and why?

I LOVE Power Vinyasa Yoga. It's fairly fast paced, all the poses flow together and classes always start and finish with meditation and maybe an Om here or there :) I have developed better flexibility, increased muscle tone, and overall better outlook on everything! There is something pretty incredible about yoga. Everyone can benefit from mind body practices.

Depending on where you live, there should be community yoga events where you can try out different styles. Most classes teach to multiple levels which is great.

At my son's preschool they introduce kids yoga, which I am also a huge advocate for. It makes my heart smile when I see him do tree pose :) Toddlers and yoga are quite possibly the cutest thing ever.

Hi Susan,

I would definitely start out in beginner yoga for a class or two. You mentioned you are a beginner to yoga, but in great shape - so holding the poses won't be all that challenging - however, you will learn the proper form as well as the basics to build a good foundation for all other yoga classes. Yoga, is all about proper form and technique, so it's important to master this, before moving on.

I actually have not tried Iyengar Yoga - but it's focus is attention to detail and precise asanas (poses). Most of the time, belts, blocks and other props are used to ensure your body is in the exact proper positioning - so might be a little intimidating at first if you are new to yoga.

I myself do a hybrid version of yoga :) It's a bikram power flow style incorporating most of the traditional 26 poses of bikram + cardio-style flow series in a hot and humid room. I like this only because I feel like I am incorporating the stretching with the strength, and the mind control to get over the 'heat element'.

As with anything - it's really about what you like and what your body responds to.

Good rule of thumb to keep in mind - whichever style you wind up practicing, it all leads to the same practice of self-healing, awareness, control, discipline and ultimately self-realization. Good luck - let me know how your yoga practice develops.

Best,
Lauren
