My health story begins where I grew up, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One of the advantages of being from the Midwest was I always had access to the health education, clinical and counseling services that I needed. Having gone to the University of Michigan, we had a health system on campus for students, paid for by tuition. There was also free public health clinics off campus that were only a bus ride away. Everything I needed for my own health and well-being was within arms reach.
Now living in the South, I realize how valuable my health community was in Michigan. Often youth in South Carolina don't know where to go to get health information, let alone have transportation to get there. There are not always health clinics on campus', and the education in not always comprehensive enough to provide students with the full range of information they need to make informed decisions about their health.
Now, my Health Story means advocating for young people in the South through community outreach in support of responsible public health policies!
