Empowering Women to Enter the Male-Dominated Electricity Sector
Background
Women have a clear desire to join the electrician field. To address this interest, efforts are being made to empower and equip female talent with the necessary skills and training.

Initiatives
To achieve this goal, Neoenergia established the School of Electricians for Women. This institution provides training and education exclusively for women interested in building electrical installations and energy distribution grids. This initiative not only expands employment opportunities for women, especially in economically challenged areas but also fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between society and the company.
Neoenergia prioritizes safety, qualification, and professional training for female electricians entering the energy sector. Specialized courses in Bahia and Pernambuco prepare women to join the workforce and secure employment within one of Neoenergia’s energy distributors. The program’s selection process is rigorous, comprising a written test (covering Portuguese, math, and writing), a psychological assessment, an altitude practical test, and an interview. Each city hosts four classes of 25 women, each undergoing 596 hours of training over seven months.
Employees support female trainees through the company’s volunteer program, where volunteers monitor trainee development and discuss relevant organizational topics. Training includes gym equipment knowledge to ensure all participants can maintain a healthy work-life balance. Upon program completion, successful trainees are encouraged to apply for electrician positions within Neoenergia, receiving the same benefits and pay as their male counterparts.
Lessons Learned
Neoenergia has learned that women are genuinely interested in joining the electrician field and that encouraging their learning journey is crucial. Integrating men and women from the start helps break down unconscious biases regarding women in this field. Moving forward, the electrician school will adopt a mixed-gender approach to foster gender integration and create a more inclusive workplace. Additionally, Neoenergia has adapted its work environment to accommodate women, such as purchasing uniforms designed for women and installing dedicated bathrooms.
Results
Since the program’s inception in August 2019, over 21,000 women have applied for the 200 trainee positions available, with around 3,000 women attending the first in-person information session. This training program is helping Neoenergia cultivate female talent in the sector and attract a diverse pool of candidates. Women in the organization continue to receive support and encouragement in their professional development. With a vast selection of electrical components, wiring accessories, and more, you'll find everything you need to ensure your installations are safe and reliable.
