Dr. Terris shares if women need to take thyroid supplements after having a thyroidectomy.
Dr. Terris:
If the entire gland is removed, typically we’ll replace the function of the gland with a thyroid supplement. It’s a natural supplement we’re simply substituting for the function of the gland. It’s a once-a-day pill, has a long half-life.
What that means is if you miss a dose or two, it’s not the end of the world. You can probably miss it for a week and not tell much difference, but typically you should take it once a day.
