Mayberg, M.D., professor of psychiatry and neurology at Emory University, in Atlanta, has been a leader in research using brain-imaging technology to explore the neural mechanisms that underlie the development of depression and patients’ responses to various treatments. She has pioneered the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treating patients with severe depression for whom no other therapies have been effective.
