Tips for Women Who Want to Lose Weight

Identify Values That Guide Your Life

Weight loss is more than a simple matter of counting calories. It is mostly an inner transformation process where the values that guide your life need to be clear in your mind. In order to lose weight and stay fit, health must rank among your most important values - important enough to guide your behavior naturally, without the need to rely on effort or motivation. Health must become a way of life, not a battle against yourself. Photo: Getty Images

Set Realistic and Manageable Goals

Setting realistic and manageable goals can transform your life. Trying to lose weight fast automatically puts your body under stress. This stress affects your metabolism and reduces the capacity of your muscles cells to burn fat. Under these circumstances, you will likely end up gaining weight. Losing one to two pounds per week, eating enough calories to maintain a higher metabolic rate and doing three hours of exercise per week are realistic and manageable goals. Photo: Getty Images

Determine at a Glance the Number of Calories per Portion for Every Meal

You need to be able to tell, just by looking at a plate or a serving, how many calories are involved. This habit can be developed in one or two days with a simple calorie table. It's that easy. Once you're able to do this, it becomes very difficult for you to overeat because you know what you’re putting into your body, and you won't be able to kid yourself anymore. This step is critical and it will save you all kinds of unnecessary effort in the long run. Photo: Getty Images

Avoid the White Bear Syndrome

If I say to you "don't think about a white bear", what are your going to do? Think about a white bear! When most women try to lose weight, food becomes the white bear. By starving themselves, all they think about is food and the whole thing becomes an unbearable obsession. All this can be avoided by simply eating several small meals throughout the day. This way, your body can find the right balance between achieving proper nutrition and developing a healthy hunger sensation. Photo: Getty Images

The Bathroom Scale Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Weight loss and exercise can lead to confusing results on the bathroom scale. You want to lose body fat, but exercise increases muscle mass. If you lose 2 pounds of fat but gain 3 pounds of muscle mass, you will have gained 1 pound! This is actually a good thing! A bio-impedance scale can help you figure all this out. This scale measures your real body fat percentage, which is the information you really need. Photo: Getty Images

Know What Actions Will Lead to Success and Carry Them Out with Confidence

Eat enough calories to allow your basal metabolic rate to increase and spend more calories at rest (no starvation must be allowed). Make sure that your protein intake represents 15% to 20% of your total daily caloric intake. It's better to exercise two hours a week for the rest of your life than to exercise every day for only four or five months. Photo: Getty Images

Just Do It

Stick with your nutritional plan seven days a week. You can't hope for results if you follow your plan on weekdays and let yourself go on weekends. Include exercise in your schedule. When the time comes, just do it... no excuses. This discipline will be your most powerful weapon. Then, one day, you will realize it has become natural for you to exercise regularly. You won't need to convince or motivate yourself anymore. Your new habits will become part of your lifestyle. Photo: Getty Images

Allow Yourself to be Successful

Some women will do anything for the people they love. Too often, they drop everything they are doing in order to help someone in need. But what about yourself? Give time to the ones you love, but don't give it all. Take time for yourself. Take the time you need to succeed. The ones you love have to accept "no" from time to time. Photo: Getty Images

Understand How Weight Loss Really Works

Weight loss attempts don't usually fail due to a lack of effort or will power, but rather a poor understanding of how weight loss really works. Weight loss must be a medium to long-term project. By following these simple and basic tips, you pave the way to successful and permanent weight loss. Photo: Getty Images
